Tamil Nadu has a vast coastline of 1076 kms which constitutes about 15 percent of the total coastal length of India. The State is endowed with varied coastal habitats like mangroves, corals, seaweeds, sea grass beds, salt marshes, mudflats, sand dunes etc.
The Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) Notification, 2011 has been issued vide S.O 19 (E) dated 06.01.2011 under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 by the MoEFCC, Government of India in the place of CRZ Notification 1991 to protect the coastal environment and to regulate development activities along the coastal areas, thereby aiming to ensure livelihood security to the fishing communities, other local communities living in the coastal areas, to conserve and protect the coastal stretches and to promote sustainable development in the coastal areas. Now, the MoEFCC, Govt. of India has promulgated the CRZ Notification, 2019 in supersession of CRZ Notification, 2011.
After the approval of Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) prepared as per CRZ Notification, 2019, the said Notification will be implemented in the State. Now, CRZ Notification, 2011 is being followed.
The Department of Environment & Climate Change has uploaded the approved Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) maps in the Department’s website and communicated the same to the implementing departments viz., District Collectorates, TNPCB, Department of Fisheries etc., Based on the approved CZMP, the public or departments may verify the CRZ area classification.
As per Para 4.2 (ii) of CRZ Notification, 2011, the SCZMA shall examine the documents, in accordance with the approved CZMP and in compliance with CRZ notification and make recommendations to the concerned Authorities, within a period of sixty days from the date of receipt of complete application.
